There is a definite chill in the air as Winter settles in. And as we keep toasty in our winter coats, oversized knits and boots, our skin gets increasingly dry (and more irritated). Here are some tips to keep your skin hydrated and glowing throughout Winter.

Invest in a humidifier.

The drier the air, the drier the skin. So to help your skin retain as much moisture as possible it’s a good idea to keep a humidifier in the room that you spend most of your time in. Also avoid cranking up the heater too high, keep it at a moderate heat to minimise the extra dry air in your home.

Increase the good oils.

What you eat will make a big difference to the hydration of your skin. Eat a diet rich in walnuts, olive oil, avocados and oily fish like salmon which contain Omega-3 fatty acids. Drink plenty of water and if you can, minimise coffee and alcohol as they will dehydrate you further.

Up the antioxidants, vitamin A & C.

Foods like carrots and berries contain antioxidants and vitamins that help your body produce collagen and help fight free radicals, which can cause wrinkles and fine lines on the skin.

Switch to a richer moisturiser.

Your skin will be needing additional moisture over winter, so switch to a thicker face cream to compensate. And always follow up with an SPF (even if it’s cloudy!)

Exfoliate twice a week.

Between the cold air outside and dry indoor heating, your skin cells will dehydrate and die out faster in winter. It’s best to gently exfoliate the dead cells to make way for the new. Exfoliated skin absorbs moisturisers more easily so all your skincare efforts won’t go to waste.

Use hand cream.

Your hands will be the first to show dryness so apply hand cream liberally and often. And invest in a pair of stylish gloves to keep them warm and protected.

Here’s to keeping you hydrated and glowing throughout Winter.
